How to Charter a Private Yacht in Dubai — Step-by-Step Guide

Chartering a private yacht in Dubai sounds simple enough — pick a boat, show up at the marina, sail off into the Arabian Gulf. In practice, the difference between a memorable charter and a frustrating afternoon comes down to a few decisions made in the first ten minutes of planning. After fifteen years of running charters from Dubai Marina Yacht Club, here's the step-by-step version of what we tell every first-time guest.

1. Decide the size of your group first, not the yacht

Most guests start by scrolling through yacht photos. That's backwards. Start with your final guest count and work up — a 35-foot sport yacht is perfect for 8 people and miserable for 15. Our rough rule: allow 2.5 feet of yacht per guest for comfort. A 50-foot yacht seats 17 guests maximum; a 56-footer handles 25; a 100-footer absorbs 80 without feeling crowded.

2. Pick your charter occasion — it changes everything

A birthday party needs a fly deck for dancing. A sunset proposal needs a quiet intimate sport yacht. A corporate day needs shade, air-con and PowerPoint. A fishing trip needs a stable-hulled mid-size yacht and 8+ hours. The occasion dictates the yacht size more than the guest count does.

3. Book your route with the captain, not the salesperson

Always ask which captain you'll get. In Dubai Marina, the most experienced captains know exactly where the light catches the Burj Al Arab at golden hour (it's not where the tourist maps put you). They also know the quiet anchor spots the crowds miss.

4. Ask about total price, not hourly rate

Some Dubai operators quote low hourly rates and then add fuel surcharges, marina fees, crew tips and water add-ons. We don't do that — but you should confirm with whoever you charter with: "Is this price all-in?" If they hesitate, walk away.

5. Arrive 15 minutes early and don't overpack

Dubai Marina traffic peaks 17:00–19:00. If your charter starts at 18:00, plan to arrive at 17:45. Don't bring huge bags — there's no luggage storage on yachts, and you won't need jackets, guidebooks or laptops anyway.
